Upon arrival at the docs, the party goes their separate ways after dividing up the loot. Ogden begins to work on repairing the half-plate armor he found on the skeletal cleric.
Time passes and Arias Lightfoot gets a message to deliver to Datura. The message is from Baron Von BarrenBaron, and it reads:
Rat-men have stolen a valuable heirloom from me. Gold will be paid for evidence of removal of each dead rat-man.
- Baron Von BarrenBaron
Arias is intrigued by the offer, and offers to help Datura. They set off to meet the Baron, Arias warns Datura that this will be a formal occasion and she should think about dressing up. Arias cleans up as best he can, but Datura makes no efforts.
BarrenBaron lives in the Noble Quarter, and a butler invites the pair into the parlor and offers them refreshments. BarrenBaron arrives shortly after and introduces himself to the two, noticeably put off by the appearance and smell of Datura. After some polite conversation, the trio agree to the terms of the business deal: 5gp per dead rat-man and 25gp for return of the comb. BarrenBaron instructs the party that he was in Sailor’s run when he was attacked by two rat-men.
Datura gathers the party, and they agree to meet at the Weeping Wench tomorrow to track down the rat-men.
The next day, the party starts by interviewing locals to see if anyone has noticed anything strange happening. Some of the locals admit to believing rumors about the rat-men, but no one knows exactly where they come from. The party decides to set an ambush leaving Hogan in an alley by himself as bait. Kestrel watches the alley from an adjacent rooftop while Datura and Arias perform on the street a block away. The plan is that Kestrel will sound a whistle when the rat-men appear and the party will capture or follow them to their lair.
The rat-men do come, around 1AM that night. They sneak up on Hogan undetected by the party and jump him. Kestrel decides to shoot one while he has the advantage of surprise, and quickly fells it with an arrow through the neck. The remaining rat-man flees into the streets with Hogan hot on his tail casting combat spells at it. This ruckus catches the attention of Datura and Arias who follow suit. The party chases the rat-man to a sewer entrance where Hogan and Datura decide to follow it while Kestrel, Arias, and Dogmeat choose to stay behind.
After a couple minutes of running, the rat-man becomes exhausted and is captured by Hogan and Datura. Attempts to interrogated it go nowhere when they discover he doesn’t speak Common. Datura leaves Hogan with the rat-man and returns to the surface to get the rest of the party. They return to the sewers and decide to kill the rat-man and let dogmeat track them by scent. The sewers are narrow, 15 feet wide, with 5 foot ledges on either side of a 5 foot channel where the waste-water collects. The sewers run downhill from east to west. The party arrives at a four-way intersection where the waste-water merges into a larger, 10 foot channel. Taking no particular precautions, the party is overheard by a patrol of rat-men who wait in ambush, hiding in some debris on the side of the tunnels. The rat-men swarm dogmeat, who is leading the party, and a rat-man rogue positioned on the opposite tunnel ledge sneak attacks Hogan. The resulting battle is swift but brutal, with Hogan and Arias taking significant damage from sneak attacks before the rat-men are eliminated.
Continuing on, the party discovered the location to the rat-men lair. There was a large main entrance with two tiny entrances only large-enough for rat-men to easily fit through. Kestrel searched the main entrance to find a tripwire for a crossbow trap in front of a trapdoor for a pit trap. He disarmed the crossbow trap and told the party to wait while he scouted ahead. The main entrance opened up into a storage room with a small fire, and three rat-men were playing dice in the mess hall to the left. Kestrel attacked unseen, killing two ratmen before the other could cry out. Hearing the commotion, Arias ran down the main entrance, triggering the trap-door and falling 10 feet into water. As Kestrel finished off the last rat-man, Datura lowered her whip down for Arias. As Arias grabbed the whip, a crocodile bit him and Datura quickly pulled him up, out of the jaws of the beast. The party entered another room where a rat-man was tanning animal hides, killing him and taking several vials of acid from his supplies. Kestrel scouted out a set of double doors leading to the last remaining room, hearing the sounds of chanting and drum music coming from the other side. The party prepares their next move as the episode comes to an end.
